TO20 Hydraulics

Hello Folks,

I am a new member and proud owner of a TO20 Ferguson. I recently overhauled the hydraulic system (control valve, cams, springs, and gaskets) and replaced the oil with mineral 90wt. Now that I've attached the brush hog, the hydraulics works much better (going up and down), however, when I raise the hydraulics at to a mowing level (approx. 6 inches) the hydraulics will not maintain the height. Ironically, when I raise the hydraulics 6 inches or more it will stay up just fine. I have researched on how to fine-tune the hydraulics and tried what has been suggested so far. I am looking for ideas and suggestions.

As Richard L noted, a TO20 (and TO30) does not have position control. There is up, down, and a "neutral" of sorts. And in "neutral" the position will seep down, the speed of the fall will depend on how tight the whole system is.

Position control can be added to a TO20 fairly easily if you are somewhat handy. Instructions are available online. Or chains can be added so that the lift is prevented from dropping below a certain point. Or, for many models of mowers, there is what is sometimes called "Marlowe's method" here on YT, which is simple and elegant and needs no added items since it relies on the draft control system of the TO20/30 (although I've found it best suited for level ground).

Richard's link or searching in the archives should give you lots of information. But, if you want specifics on anything, just ask.

as a young person when I mowed grass with a TO-20 and bush hog I would find the height I needed for the mower to be at then moved the wing nut on the quadrant so that the hyd. lever would rest on it. that held the mower where I wanted it as long as the pto was spinning. did the same with a 9N.

first you MUST have the right bush hog for a to-20 it must have a stationary top frame not one that will move back and forth
