Ferguson Post Hole Digger

Hi,
Just acquired one of these. Just a couple of questions.

The top mounting holes, on the digger, are larger than the pin. Should there be a sleeve?

Should the two arms be joined together up by the top mount?

When raising the digger jams. The reason seems to be that where the lower links connect, the bar swivels to the front then jams, and when I push it backwards the digger rises OK. The bar looks non original.

Anyone got close up pictures?

Wouldn't think it had bushing's. Just wear from use. The last picture of pipe looks to
be added or has been replaced with the galvanized pipe. You could cut the top ends off
and replace with new ends. Probably just take thick wall pipe and repair. Just cut to
length.

I have two of these post hole diggers , Model DFE20 , I find them to be extraordinary implements that give great results .
The top mounts of the arms are a little loose but not normally as much as on yours , you could sleeve them but it will not make much difference to the operation .
There is no other connection between the arms other than that of the long pin and of course the cross bar .
Your cross bar is a cobbled together one and from your photo it looks as if the mounting plates are far too short . This might be why it is jamming .
That odd looking piece of round bar welded to the top of the left hand arm is there so that you can safely fold the pto shaft along side the arm , the pto coupling sits on that bar . To do this you spin the entire gearbox and auger over and towards the back of the tractor .
The most annoying thing about these is that to move them raised you must disconnect the drive or drive around with the auger vertical and actually spinning .

Just found some other photographs of the cross arm .
The machines are so good that the mounts are often adapted for other much bigger tractors . This is what happened to one of mine .
Bodged up one and remade original shown here

Ta all,
Mine had been adapted for another tractor and looks like it was well used.
I shall see about either making a new cross beam or new lugs.

I'd like to see the insides. Is it two sets of worm gears? Output drive flange has a shear pin?
It looks pretty extravagant. Did they sell many?

Fairly simple to rebuild , no bearings, it uses bronze bushes instead . Seals are readily available , one of the gear boxes I rebuilt had a few chipped teeth , these don't affect the performance or make any noise .

A bit off topic:
If you ever use this old digger and you get it hung in the ground and can't get it out,

If your old Ferguson has ground speed pto: engage ground speed pto, jack one rear wheel off the ground, place gear lever in reverse, slowly
let clutch out , pto will run in reverse rotation and unscrew you post hole digger auger right out of the ground,
Hope this never happens to you, but it's a good thing to place on file if it ever does, as stuck augers are hard to get released sometimes,
