Tea 20 Brake Return Springs

Folks
I'm in the process of giving the brakes some
much needed attention and have discovered
that the return Springs are of different
length and colour with one being blue and
the other red. On one wheel the shorter
spring was fitted to the top shoe and on the
other wheel it was attached to the bottom
shoe. I was going to replace with new
Springs which seem to be the same length
100milimeters top and bottom. So a tad
confused as to just what is correct.
Any help appreciated.

Hmm looks like the longer one goes on top
and shorter to the bottom. Wow super clean
not sure I will go to that extent maybe a
blow out with air hose.

It is correct to have different colored springs in the brakes, as one is stronger than the other.
This allows one brake shoe to act first, and should be the leading shoe.
There is some debate whether the leading shoe should be the same on both sides of the tractor.
If they are the same then both brakes act evenly in forward direction of motion, but weaker in reverse.
Swapping the springs on each side allows one side to have leading shoe in forward direction, and other side to have leading shoe in reverse direction.
Most seem to want to have both sides acting best when in forward direction.

PCP had the same trouble .

Did not need to type a thing, seems i am answer posts via proxy :D

My understanding is that for floating cam type brakes springs should be as follows:
R/H side blue at top, red at bottom
L/H side red at top, blue at bottom
Brake shoes should be centralised in the drum before adjusting.

Great and that is as I found them so guess I will put back the same way although not totally convinced that that is totally correct.

The reason the springs are opposite to each other on either side is to give equal braking force in both forward and reverse .
You could put the springs into the same positions on each side to give maximum braking effect when moving forwards ans slightly less when in reverse .

With the Springs set the same on both sides
I wonder just how much difference there
actually is when braking forward as opposed
to breaking in reverse.
