Crankshaft pulley

I am the one with steering gear housing problems but I have figured out what to do thanks to this forum.
Now I find something wrong with this crankshaft pulley. It has a piece welded from outer part to nut see photos. Pulley is loose, I can move it a little around the crankshaft like the key is worn and back and forth. What has someone done and why?

Only a guess.....Someone has placed a spacer as per your pictures to prevent the PULLEY from falling off..........?
 
That doesn't look good...

Probably the bolt would not stay tight because the pulley has been run loose on the crank. Possibly the key is gone.

And what is the shiny hex nut in front? Is that a quick fix for bad thrust bearings?

The welded pieces will have to be cut out to get the bolt out. Then see how bad it is wallowed inside the pulley and on the crank nose. It should be a tight slip fit, not loose. The pulley can be replaced. But if the crank nose is worn, and the key way wallowed, it may be crank time!

Before going any further, put the pulley back on, snug the bolt. Be sure there is some freeplay in the clutch pedal. Then pry forward and back on the pulley, see how much end play is in the crank. There shouldn't be much, but if there is like an 1/8 inch or more, the thrust washers have broken and fallen out.

Thinking they used a fiber washer behind the front main? Someone probably has a parts breakdown and more experience there than I do.

You may have a good manual, but if not here is a diagram of how it all should go together.

I realized I didn't take a picture with the pulley on when I had mine apart. I only have pictures after the pulley and timing cover were off. That pulley just slides on, but it shouldn't have any play. Is that hex nut on the crankshaft, or is it on the pivot pin? Normally there are teeth for the hand crank on the front of the bolt thing that holds everything tight on the crankshaft. I wonder if your teeth were cut off to make room for a cobbled up repair?

I like Steve's idea of checking what freeplay you have right now, then I guess put it all apart and see what you've got. Take pictures and ask back.
