Rusty pitted slasher (bushhog)

Hi guys, This slasher i treated for rust primed and painted about 2 years ago, but the paint had lifted in some places on the pitting

The pix is after hitting it with a wire wheel and pressure washer

The gearbox has a pin hole in it down in the pitting where it has started leaking oil

After and adequate fix for this?

I am thinking fibreglass filler, as it seems the metal is getting a little thin in places. Or fill it with weld ( but dont think my weld skills are up to that). Or weld a plate over the bottom pitted still area.

I know welding is better than filler but a lot harder for me to do.

So has anyone done this kinda thing before and have any ideas.

Overall pix of gearbox sorry about rotation

Very difficult , if possible at all to weld that lot up , by the time you ground off the rest of the corrosion there would be B* all left .

You could try this two part epoxy filler , that should fix the leak ,
http://www.selleys.com.au/fillers-putty/epoxy/knead-it-steel/

I would be more concerned about vibrations from the blades tearing the bottom of the box off the deck and twisting up the slasher shaft and the tractor pto shaft.
The only way I can think of to salvage it is to make up a new tight fitting collar and mount plate from steel and fit the remains of the box into this .

I would go with epoxy instead of welding.

The trick is getting it clean and stop oozing oil coming from the inside. After draining the gear case, if you can, stand the mower up on edge with the repair area up. Then use a Dremmel or air grinder, grind down to shiny metal in the area that is leaking, wire brush the scale. Clean the area with carb cleaner or something non petroleum, like lacquer thinner, acetone, etc. Then apply an epoxy, like JB Weld, pushing it into the leak.

You can then prime and paint to help slow further corrosion.

Yee... welding steel with steel would be a bigger mess.... but brazing... bronzing.... brassing... whatever the trendy strine word for it... would be very possible to plug the hole.... using hundreds rather than thousands of degrees.... but since Father Christmas obviously spent your TORCH money on p!$$.... you sir... are buggered as usual!!! Think torches... dream torches.... breathe torches... beeee..... torches..... you NEED a bloody set of bloody torches mate!!! yesterday....

Well thankyou gentlemens.

As always Tony is trying to bugga someone  with some torches
Charles is trying to give me worsrt case scenario and Steve, cannot really comment as i do not really know you :D

Anyway filling the hole is not a really an issue, I was thinking the 2 pack epoxy steel or jb weld. The reason i was think fibreglass so it will not absorb moisture. So good to here i can leave the welder in the garage and wait for bloody Tony to send me some torches
