I just got a TO 20 and the steering box is in need of work. when loading and unloading the tractor the left wheel just turned which ever way it wants to. What might be wrong with it? Any place show how to work and adjust this?

It could be as simple as tightening the adjusting screw. They are on either side of the steering box with a 1-1/16 retaining nut. Loosen nut then
adjust screw in to tighten. You will need the wheels off the ground and have to find the neutral spot. Both steering arms should be pointing
slightly towards the back, l think.

I tried that, no luck. The arms are real loose like bushings are wore out. I can pull the arms out maybe 1/2 inch. Just wondering if that could cause it?

In my opinion I would take the steering column off, take the plate off the bottom, then you can see what needs to be done inside.
You should purchase the TO20 service manual and the Parts book will help you identify parts also. These may be purchased on ebay or this site at the top left of this page under MARKETPLACE then click on tractor parts.
repairing a TO 20 steering column

This site sells the center steering shaft 181365M1 you need as well as the upper and lower bearings (Part No:
STEERING_KIT) and steering column cover 890576M1 About $150 bucks. You also need to drill and tap the top cover
and add a greaze zerk. Carefully lube and rotate steering wheel to lube top bearing. Front wheels off the ground
is easiest way. Fill box with 50/50 90W mixed with NGLI rated 00 (JD Corn Head) grease. Mix in zip-lock bag, cut
corner off and fill.
Once all that is done, take off the radius arm caps and stuff in a pre 1980 copper penny. Reinstall the caps and
steering should be near new.

Thanks. I suppose the copper penny takes up the space where it has wore off. Also I have read all I could find and saw a little, very little about timing the steering box. Any info about that?
