TEA20 will not start

Hello;
I have a 1952 TEA20 85mm 12v. It will not start ( was running fine when I parked it a week ago): when I turn the key and engage Start nothing happens (as in not a sound..no clicks, etc.). So I bypassed the starting system - ground from battery (verified battery is at 12V) to ground on tractor, then positive from battery direct to starter - nothing ( a small spark of course but nothing from the starter). So I figured the starter had died - I had it rebuilt and I re-installed it today. Same problem!

This is my snow plowing tractor so it is pretty important here in Canada right now. Anyone have any ideas what I'm missing?

Thanks

The problem you have identified seems similar to mine a few years ago. Mine does have a solenoid and that was not getting grounded properly. Cheers, Murray

You need a test light or volt meter to do some diagnostics.

You'll need to do the test with the system under load. Have an assistant hold the starter switch in while you test for voltage. Start checking across the battery posts, then move one lead to the battery cable clamp, then move the other lead, etc, etc, making one move at a time until you find the loss of power. Common places for problems are the starter contacts on the shifter, and where the ground strap connects to the sheet metal dash. Best to move the ground cable directly to the engine block.

If you track good voltage all the way to the starter post and the starter case ground, there is still a problem with the starter.

Be careful nothing starts smoking! If it does, chances are, that is where the problem is! Also be absolutely sure the tractor is in neutral! It could start cranking without warning!

A TEA20-85 as built does not have a solenoid. The problem doesn't sound like the stick either. Do not remove your starter completely, but loosen the bolts and jiggle out a little. And jump it directly from a battery booster cable. It sounds like the Bendix is jammed up. Or you don't have a good ground, so while loose, wire brush or sand the back of the starter housing and block while you are there.
Are you all iced up from the last storm? Might just be too cold in there.

Problem solved. The starter was not repaired properly! Took it back and was a bit cranky - ok maybe more than a bit. Anyway the guy repaired it again and delivered and installed it for no additional charge - I forgave him and we had a beer together... stuff happens. AND Fergie runs again.

Thanks everyone for your help.
