Electronic ignition

I'm considering changing my ignition from points and
condenser to electronic ignition. Any comments on if it's a
good idea or not.

If you are tired of changing points and the occasional condenser it is a great idea. Job takes about fifteen minutes to install. Takes almost more time to get and put away the tools. Just added one on my TO35 works perfect and they are here on the parts page

I think they are wonderful! You will like it.

I don't know what model you are putting it on, but be aware they are voltage and polarity specific.

Just be sure your electrical system is set up as it will stay before you order it.

I have been considering doing the same thing. problem is I can't seem to wrap my head round putting out the money. my machine's get used very little and the points generally last a long time.

I think they are a good idea, I keep wanting to put one on my Farmall H, but the points and condenser just keep working.

I put one in last year on my TO 35 and love it. Turn of the key and she starts right up. I don't know about the horsepower increase thing but I did see better throttle response and it felt like it ran a little stronger. Simple to install with simple instructions. You could check with the Petronix site to get proper model for your tractor which is important. The YT site here carries the unit.

I was a big fan of the Pertronix system until I ran into reliability issues.

After 5 years, my Pertronix ignition module failed. I contacted Pertronix and they gave me the trouble shooting info to verify it was the module. (Their customer support was excellent!)I bought a replacement module for $50+ and installed that. Three months later, that failed. I ran the checks and it was again a module failure. I will point out that I never left the key "on". That can cause the module to overheat and fail. Pertronix provided a new module at no cost per their warranty. I needed the tractor during the interim so I installed the points. I have vehicles that were 35 years old that had electronic ignition that never failed and I don"t understand how, for Pertronix"s $100 unit price, they can"t supply a more reliable system. I sure they outsourced the manufacturing to "the land of almost right" and got a low unit cost but reliability suffered.

For this reason, I don"t recommend them any more.

I need to ask a question that might me look stupid or na?ve beyond belief. if companies like petronox, auto lite, champion etc. outsource manufacturing to foreign countries wouldn't the parent company have some sort of quality control in place like in the united states ?

I called Pertronix and was told to use either carbon core or suppression core plug wires, not solid wires with Pertronix modules. Apparently the suppression wires reduce RFI (Radio Frequency Interference)that can damage the module.

You would like to think that but many of these companies see QA as a cost and f not place much value you on it. Personally, I believe that is short sighted thinking.

I never saw any mention of it in the Pertronix instructions not was I told this when I contacted them. My original unit operated 5 years before it failed so it can"t be that sensitive to RF emmissons.
