sorry if this is a double post - working on a te-20 after running about 2 minutes at fast idle the exhaust pipe turns cherry red hot. what
could cause that

Try adjusting the carb, it might be too rich. Timing could be off, but that is a second hunch. Don't mess with that till you try the carb needle.

Tony I'm not questioning you have the right answer but would ask why do you think it's running rich? I have very little auto mechanic knowledge. My specialty is chainsaws. Running lean causes hot issues in 2 strokes, more fuel a rich condition cools a 2 stroke.
Please explain so I can learn more, thanks, John

thanks for the reply, it has a big adjusting knob and a smaller screwdriver slot adjusting screw, which would be the correct one to try, I do have to turn the gas shutoff, closed or gas will drip out of the carb. I think I will get a basic rebuild kit and try to fix that, your response makes sense

If the carb is flooding, that needs to be addressed first, no way to tune it with the carb not right.

Hot exhaust can be caused by retarded ignition timing.

Check the centrifugal advance, be sure it if free and returning as it should, also check point gap, and shaft bushing for wear. There needs to be very little side play, or the points will not stay set.

Finally check the ignition timing. The manual will have the procedure, or you can set it by ear if you know what to listen for.
