This is a question for a buddy. Give me some ideas... His tractor cranks, but won't fire. Has fuel to carb. If he takes out plugs and puts gas in, it will start and keep running. Besides some obstruction in fuel line (clogged elbow strainer, etc) what is a likely culprit. Not sucking enough fuel into cylinders upon normal start up. Otherwise, once started the tractor runs fine. Thanks.

First guess would be the choke not fully closing.

Also weak spark can cause hard starting.

Weak spark can be a result of needing a tune up, plugs, wires, points, coil, anything ignition related.

Or a dragging starter can pull too many amps, nothing left for the ignition. If it's still 6 volt, everything has to be right for them to start, including a healthy battery, proper charging system, and BIG battery cables.

And not grounded behind the dash panel, as was the custom on some machines. Take of the engine ground cable and make it shiny, slight coat with oil and reassemble.

To- elaborate? on Steve's idea- are you guys pulling the choke rod out till she hits on all 4? Then nursing it for a few more seconds till she stays running? All- nearly all- Continentals need a choke on first start even in summer.
