What type of spark plug for TO30?

I?ve owned my TO30 for almost a year. I do not know any of its history. I pulled one of the spark plugs for the first time yesterday. It was covered with black soot. The spark plug was a Champion UD16.
I?m going to replace all 4 spark plugs. Is Champion UD16 the correct type to use on a Continental Z129 engine?

Sooty plugs are a sign of too rich a mixture. The main jet should be (big screw on fuel bowl) should be unscrewed outward ~1-1/8 urns but no less than 1 full turn.

I have found that Autolite 3116 work best on the Z series Continental engines.

As Jerry says, the Autolite 3116 is the best. The tractor catalogs all sell the 386 but the 3116 is better. All the local stores sell them: Advance, NAPA, etc. If memory serves, they take a 7/8 deep socket.

Champ plugs tend to run cold and foul out. Don't play carby until the new plugs are in and have been run a short time. Then if the new ones are black, tweak the carby.

You may have owned that tractor for a year but have you worked it? Work it hard for a couple hours and then check the plugs. Light loads won't get the plugs hot enough to self clean and if the thermostat is missing or sticking open that will exacerbate the problem.

I've worked the tractor. I've done about 10 hours of discing in the past year. The spark plugs are 7/8". I'll try the Auto lite 3116. I'll also check the thermostat to.

One of the projects for the TO30 in 2017 is to replace tstat, hoses and fan belt

Thanks guys

You should agree Phil! You were the one that told me about them and you were right. They are a non-resistor plug as opposed to the 386. That"s probably why they work so well.

D16 is kind of a cold plug. My TO-35 really likes the Champion D18. Also, are you running points ignition? My plugs stay much cleaner since I switched to the Pertronix setup.

I've ran them all. The Autolite 3116. Champion D18Y and D21 and currently running AC Delco C85S. If you go to Massey they will sell you D21 Champions as replacements. I've had no problems out of any of them. The rest of the ignition system being up to par is far more critical than what brand of plug you put in it as long as it is correct for the application.

(quoted from post at 18:56:16 12/22/16) I run points.

So do I! But I run good quality points, copper core wires, and a quality cap and rotor! If the tractor does not get worked hard very often it would benefit more from the D21 plug because it is hotter and not a projected nose plug like the 3116 or D18Y.

The ignition system is what I'm going to work on next. I already bought new copper core spark plug wires. I've yet to open the distributor since I bought the tractor a year ago. Fun stuff
