Noise coming from TO30 starter motor

After tractor starts, there is noise coming from the starter motor. It sounds like the starter pinion is rubbing against the ring gear.
Sometimes it happens sometimes it does not.
The noise is not too loud but is loud enough to be a concern.
What is this noise? How can it be fixed?

Could it be the throw out bearing? Next time it happens push clutch down and see what happens. If it's starter maybe the Bendix shaft needs a little lube.

Starter drive not pulling back in and is bouncing off the flywheel. Flywheels are cheap enough. The labor can be a pita plus it still needs a starer drive at least.
Like was mentioned, next time you fire it up, step on the clutch. If you get noise stepping on the clutch, the clutch throw-out release bearing is worn. If you get noise with the foot off the clutch, in neutral, the input bearing in the transmission is worn. Most people get that backwards in thinking that the throw-out bearing makes noise when released. It just sits there on the input shaft not doing anything. Once you push on the clutch pedal, it slides up to the spinning clutch disc and pushes on the fingers to release the clutch disc. That pressure on the bearing is what causes it to make noise. As for the input shaft, it spins when the release bearing is not. Push on the clutch pedal, the input shaft stops spinning so you can shift gears. Let go the clutch pedal, the release bearing stops spinning and the input shaft once again starts to spin.
Chances are you are correct and the starter is just not fully releasing.

I would pull the starter and take a look. You should be able to see what is hitting, shiny surface, metal slivers, etc.

If it is the starter, and the drive is retracting fully, check the end play on the crankshaft.

Eric, My TO-30 is doing the same as you described yours was... I suspect the same problem, with my starter. My question is: Did you have to pull the distributor to remove the starter ?? Ckain, Mi
