TO30 - brake spring placement - no colors on the springs

How are the brake springs oriented on a TO30. Mine aren't color coded. If you could tell me where the strong more stout spring goes, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks !!!

I checked my Chiltons repair manual and it states, "Assembly is reverse order of dis-assembly."
Only if your old enough will you appreciate the good 'ol Chiltons.....

Bill, if I remember correctly, the Shop Manual for the TO20/30 deals with this. I'll try to check this evening, if someone doesn't get an answer for you sooner.

That's funny about Chilton's. Makes sense. But if I do that in my case, I'm going to end up with the strongest spring on the top for the right side drum and the
strongest spring on the bottom for the left side drum (drivers side in the case of a car). I drew a picture when I disassembled and I also took pictures :)
Anyhow, in the Ferguson Dealer Shop Manual it doesn't distinguish between sides. It only says "Install the black spring to the cam end of the top (secondary) shoe and the
blue spring to the cam end of the bottom (primary) shoe." I wasn't finding much more detail than that in the archives, but maybe I didn't look hard enough.

So which is the strongest spring, black or blue? And are they the same on both sides like I think the book is telling me or are they different based on how things were
before I disassembled it?

Thanks !!!

I have recently completely overhauled my TEA 1953 brakes.
The Brake Centralisers were both broken, however while I was in there I replaced all springs as a precaution and shoe linings.
The retaining springs I removed were coloured Blue and Red.
Agriline UK supplied four new springs, no colours. Queried Agriline and they stated "The Springs are no longer supplied as blue and red."
The braking is a vast improvement from previously and different tensions seem not to matter.

Reverse order... My attitude was, Thanx you sunny beach. I am smart enough to know how to take it apart. How about some info on correct assembly? Chiltons rarely, very rarely had that.
It has been too long since I did one. Typical rear brakes have the largest shoe on the back, smallest on the front. The rear shoe does most the stopping in the forward motion. I would also suspect your largest spring is going to have a direct assist on raising the pedal back up.
That's my 2 cents.
