Hi-low trans question

Looking for a transmission to slow down my TO 20. Found this TO30 with a locked up motor but a hi-low trans, according to the ad. I think it's a Sherman from the shifter location and handle, but I'm not completely sure.
Is there a way to tell if it's a step-up or step-down trans externally and without turning the wheels?
If I can talk the guy down a little more, I may get a good deal for the whole tractor.
Thanks,
BillL

Well, I could be, and probably am, wrong.
I found this picture on a Ford site and they say this shifter is for a Hupp dual-drive. It looks like the handle on the TO30.
Maybe it's a Hupp & not a Sherman?

Thanks again,
BillL

Yes Hupp dual drive similar to the Sherman combo. Harder to get
parts for than the Sherman. 12 speed lo,hi,and standard range

This is an ad for the Hupp off John Smith's website
Check the hydraulic fluid. If it looks milky than you will also have water it the Hupp. Just something to consider before an offer is made.

That is the Hupp. Usually sell on fleabay for $500, last few have gone for about $750. I believe the shift
handle pulls out and goes down for under-drive. In and up is over-drive and straight down is direct. That Hupp
is either the low range or the high range model with the top speed of either 14 MPH or 24 MPH. You won't know
that until either you pull it out or get it running with someone following you in a car or a hand held GPS.
Beyond that is the early versions had a tendency to stick between ranges. So if your shifting it, take it slow
and make the proper shift pattern. Don't try to round the edges and you slide it into the next gear. It ain't a
race car. When you jam it, work the shift handle in a proper shifting pattern and it should come out. I have
also heard that raising one tire helps to get them unstuck.
The later versions had better designed gears and corrected shift fingers. Shermans combo's have a top speed of
24 MPH without exception.

E-bay prices are usually higher. The one at EXPO this year was for $250 and no one bought it. There was one with transmission-rear end that Steve Beivrich bought for $400 at Le grange show. Money went to show. You can always try to buy at cheaper price. Like I always you can go up but can't go down. LOL

I was surprised beyond belief when one sold for around $750. John Smith got me up the learning curve quickly on those and if it is a 25 MPH top speed original one without the shifter upgrades and the better input/output shafts with stronger gears, then I can see going about $250, maybe $300 if I am soft in the head at that moment. Unfortunately if it isn't running you have no idea what the top speed is and without taking it apart no idea about the internals.
