trying to polarize generator took a wire and went from A on gen to pos post on battery NO SPARK does this mean gen is not grounded? I took gen off and painted it ,brackets and bolts and block behind gen .do I need to take gen off and scrape off everywhere I painted to get a ground ? then will I get a spark?

Is your system a positive ground?

If so, the jumper goes to the negative post of the battery. Always polarize to the non-grounded battery post.

If still no spark, it could be the generator housing is not grounded, or there is a problem with the generator.

It is "possible" it is not grounded, but chances are if all the mount bolts are tight, it probably cut through the paint somewhere. By all means check that first.

If the case is grounded, and still no spark, if you have an ohm meter, remove the arm and field wires, check for continuity from each terminal to ground. If the arm terminal shows open, there may be a problem with the brushes, open armature, or a broken wire.
