TO30 thermostat

I'm trying to install the thermostat in the top hose. It's very, very tight. They are all brand new parts. I have read the archives about using Vaseline. I did try to warm up the hose by letting the forced hot air from the house heater vent blow on it. All this did was get the hose gummy and did not help. My concern is it looks like I'm only gonna get one shot the get this right. So is Vaseline ok or what other tricks should I try?

You'd be better to use soap than Vaseline. Vaseline is a petroleum product, not good for rubber.

Are you using a new hose? That would be more flexible. Be sure it is regular radiator hose, not the mesh reinforced type.

Yes I'm using all new parts. I'll have to look at the hose to see if reinforced. I bought everything from Steiner's. Like I said it looks like you get only one shot with the install. The tube portion of the thermostats slips right in. The trouble is the flange where they crimped the two halves together. It's slightly bigger and has a sharp edge. Kinda grippy and doesn't want to slide in easily. When you say soap do you mean liquid dish soap??

The dish soap was the ticket. The hose is the reinforced style. A little hard going getting it started, but with some effort and a screwdriver to push it down a little on each side it is situated nicely. I thought the install would be complete today but none of the big box stores or the mom and pops had the 7/16 carriage bolts needed. On to another day, thanks.

Remember to drill a 1/16" hole in the top to vent air, then once it's started in the hose, place a socket on short extension over the top, turn it over and tap the extension on the benchtop to drive in place. Consider a hose clamp around the flange area if you want to prevent it migrating away from the center of the hose.
