Ferguson Te20 sump

Hi about to embark on rebuild of 85mm motor and wanting to know if sump from 80mm motor would swap over.
Any help appreciated.

Are you talking about a say- Canadian TEA20-85? With a Standard Motors engine? An earlier Std engine sump 'should' fit.
Cause a TE20 with a Continental Z120 won't fit the 20-85's Std block. I believe you need an aluminum sump- if yours is cracked, a 'good' welding shop should be able to repair it.

Hi Tony
Yes they are both Standard Motors, the previous owner put a hole in the sump and continued to drive it without oil.
Im hoping the crank shaft will also swap over from the 80mm to the 85mm motor. There has been no damage to the block but I will need new pistons and rods bearings etc.
Thanks for your help.

If you are doing a full rebuild on an 85mm engine, you can upgrade to 87mm (which went in to the M-F 35 and 135 petrol tractors in some markets) by fitting the bigger piston/liner kits

Do you own both engines? From the sound of it... I 'd look into rebuilding the 80mm one. The cost of 'line boring' the good crankshaft to the other block... could be an expensive proposition. First one I did Saturday morning TV shadetree mechanic style- sandpaper on a water pipe- on my biggest electric drill... next one I just paid the man in the machine shop....
I don't know that much about these UK engines, so- Richard? Sam? others? can you beef up the 80mm rather than salvage the 85? I kinda thought so.....

Hi Tony
Yes I own both motors and thinking you are correct I might well be better to just upgrade the 80mm motor.
Richard used the term LINE-BORING the crankshaft in his reply to my issue, I am not familiar with that term so can you explain just what that means.

By the way this really is a fantastic site for us newbies :)

kinda hard to explain- but, blocks and cranks that could have matched up fine on the factory floor, will not align well after years of wear. Search 'line boring engines' or something like that on you tube.

A very expensive process , not to be taken on a whim .
The 87mm rebuild needs the liner seats machined down to fit , not cheap either .

According to our parts book an early series 80 mm engine was different (Engines S1E to S100E only).

#55544

Then they're the same - #825 216 M1

Sumps interchange easily . I have seen the cast iron sump from a FE35 fitted to a TEA20 as an interim measure. Bolts right up to the engine , bellhousing won't though.
Most are shattered by hitting stumps , a few by inexperienced owners jacking up directly under them .

The crank should swap straight over as should the sump...rebuilt the 85mm with good quality pistons and liners... it is the better engine.
