Hi,
I always like when people post the solution they found, and my solution is buried in the thread, so I took the liberty of starting a new thread.
The problem was the new points (which I bought from this site). They were extremely stiff and closed slowly, As soon as the ignition started and the engine sped up, they could not close fast enough for the next ignition. They did close once in a while, creating the hit-or-miss pattern I found. This also explains why I had so much trouble setting the gap WITHOUT my glasses on
I took the old points (never ever throw away anythign!) and touched them up with a file and ROAR off we went.
thank you for all the suggestions and the encouragement.
BIll
