TO-30 Missing- SOLVED

Hi,

I always like when people post the solution they found, and my solution is buried in the thread, so I took the liberty of starting a new thread.

The problem was the new points (which I bought from this site). They were extremely stiff and closed slowly, As soon as the ignition started and the engine sped up, they could not close fast enough for the next ignition. They did close once in a while, creating the hit-or-miss pattern I found. This also explains why I had so much trouble setting the gap WITHOUT my glasses on :(

I took the old points (never ever throw away anythign!) and touched them up with a file and ROAR off we went.

thank you for all the suggestions and the encouragement.

Glad for the response and to see you got it worked out. Stiff points is a new one for me. Usually with higher RPM you get point float which is why a few car makers came up with dual distributor points. That gave way to electronic ignition. Going to electronic on a tractor means that when it dies in the field at the far end of the world, you can't just pop the cap and file the points clean and re-gap them to get you back to the barn. BTDT!

Many years ago I did a tune up on a Toyota, best I remember. Back when you could still get decent points...

Could not get it to run right, acted just like a rev limiter, except it kicked in about 2000 RPM. It would start backfiring, missing, no power.
Finally traced it down to the new points. The rivets were loose where the spring attached to the arm. It would start arcing, intermittent contact. Put in another set, it ran fine.

Speaking of decent points, which are very hard to come by now... Just one more reason to go pointless!

I learned a long time ago that when something you "fixed" and then there are problems, it is many times what you "fixed" is the problem. Always now whenever I have a problem, I inspect what was just "fixed".

My 2 cents

Points and condenser wouldn't be so bad except that most of them nowadays are junk other than high dollar racing applications. Switched to Pertronix and am very happy with it.
