Hard time splitting axle collar on TO30

I've never split a Ferguson collar. I've done several Ford's.

On a Ford. I drill two 3/8 or larger holes on opposite sides of
the axle. I have this large tapered punch. The punch is about two
feet long, one inch in diameter at the top and tapers down to 3/8
or 1/2. I can't remember right now. I put the punch in one of the
holes and hammer it in till the collar cracks. The punch will
slightly spread the collar a part and I can work it off.

When I put them back together. I take the axles to the local
welding shop. He has a very large press. He presses the collars on
cold. Takes him about 20 minutes per axle. Only charges me about
$40.00.

That is the only way I will put them together.

It does not need to split, just expand enough to come off. After the hole is drilled I use a sharp chisel in the air gun in line with the hole, opens it up enough to come off.

I should mention that I cant get to the whole collar.
Some of it is back inside the bearing retainer.
I would assume its the same for everyone else?

Thanks for the air chisel idea !

John(UK) has said several times in posts on here to never press the collar on, because it removes metal as it is being pressed into place and it will not fit as tightly as it would have if it had been heated and let it cool and shrink into place. He said they can come back off if pressed into place cold.

small zip blade in a grinder .
close as you can get .
cold cheisle in the cut .
heat the new collar till it drops down .
if you dont the axle will start to pass you and its no fun
