cranking labored

With a TO 20 I am still searching for cause of weak cranking. Electrical system parts are all new: battery, ammeter, starter switch, starter. Wiring checks out. Tractor had always run well until recently. I had someone who helped me get the tractor started yesterday, sounded terrible with screeching sound (possible starter bendix slightly rubbing). He added shim to starter, but tractor could barely be cranked. Battery voltage was over 6.0.

We were thinking either a faulty starter, or something binding the flywheel? I recharged battery, took plugs out, and same labored very slow cranking. And then nothing

I am worried that the problem is now inside the tractor and becoming increasingly frustrating (and expensive).

Any thoughts?

With the starter turning the Engine over,is there any noticeable difference when you step on the clutch pedal?

Is something preventing the engine from cranking over, due to a problem aft of the clutch assembly?

Try to check the crankshaft longitudinal movement, THRUST.

Loose/undersized ground wire/connected to corroded/painted mounting surface.
Hopefully not wired to dash panel

Now that it has completely failed, the problem will be easier to find.

Use a volt meter or test light, start checking for voltage while under load (holding the starter switch closed).

If you track power all the way to the starter post and the starter case, the starter has a problem.

There may still be another problem if the engine is difficult to turn (the screeching). Remove the belt just to get the accessories out of the equation. Try cranking with the clutch pedal depressed and released, listen for changes. If it's worse with the clutch depressed, could be the release bearing or crank thrust washers. If it is worse with the clutch engaged, look for transmission problems.
