weight of engine ted20

With flywheel , clutch and exhaust manifold still attached a little over 200 kg PCP .
Too heavy to pick up by yourself

Piece of P%^%.....

To heavy for standard roof trusses that are factory made in a single garage?

as i have a crane and think it to be safer than using the tractor jib...

How closely are the trusses spaced ? I had a similar problem with the plough I am restoring , all 175kg of it !
I spread the load over a number of rafters with a length of rsj and a chain block attached, kept the load low and never let anything attached to me under it :)
Wouldn't want to use a jib for that job myself , too heavy , swings about too much , might risk cracking the alloy sump with a rapid let down .

Well i thought bugga the roof trusses i just didnt know, So i used the jib, Man it was a bit sketchy, and a bit to much weight for a jib, well its safely on the ground now:D.

I missed on buy a cheap engine stand of ebay, I should have jumped on it.

How do people work on motors without stands. Turning motor upside down there is no where really to support it without making timber cradles or similar??

might have to fork out for a stand....

Roof trusses are designed to hold up the roof, not suspend something from the bottom of them. With that said, I might put a timber across several to spread the strain and suspend the engine from that timber. Listen as you start to lift. Any creaking of the trusses says this is a bad idea.

This is why I work on them- rebuild them- on a sheet of plywood, on a wooden pallet- on the floor. I just strip it down- it gets much lighter once the head's off, I do that when it is still on the tractor, lightens the block up a real lot- then, on the floor, you can manhandle it upside down, sideways- don't mater, it is on plywood. Once the bearing work is done, and the sump pan can go back on- even temporarily, it gets stood on the atv jack, and the clutch goes back on the bell housing- then with lumber, block it up safety, then you can take your time doing the rest- while sitting on a milk crate. Engine stands look so professional, but without a chainfall, poured concrete floor, an ability to never make mistakes or be clumsie... well... I gave mine away years ago. But I am waiting for ATV jacks to go on sale again..
pics of a rebuild are so old they would be on a disc, but if you go to the archives on this and MH forum, some of my pics should be there.

Thats nearly 6 1/2cwt I don't go much on the metric system either, but I suppose a kg is a kg the world over, when Tons and Gallons are not.

Yes it seems that way Charles. I would bet there is nearly 50? over 70? pounds/ so 20-25kg, or more in a complete Standard, in the webs and main carriers, and the crank looks and feels a bit more. So does the head.
The heft of the 23C block, crank and other bits and pieces on steroids is what convinced me to rebuild it. Looked like the engine room of a ship in there...
So, this time, in this regard.... the poms did well....

had to run to hospital this morning for a exray. nurse said I weighed 136kg. I looked at her and asked if she thought we were in a foreign country:) exray was negative:) :) :)

Dang, you're a big guy. That's right at 300 lbs!
Glad the x ray turned out good.

Glad it turned out negative, when I get weighed the doc or the nurse will give me the result in kg and I have to try and work it out to stones because I cannot just picture a kilogram! Then they tell me to lose weight and take cholestrol tablets!

Cmon boys this thing is light. Had it on its side yesterday, Getting it back upright took some muscle power  with the head and manifold still on it.

After removing head , looks like it needs a bit of loving... not to mention it looks like someone took to piston no 4 with a hammer, its beating up on top under all that coking
