Splitting TO30 to replace rear crank and tranny seal - tips?

This started out to be replacing rear axle oil seals. It's amazing how these projects can expand.
Any tips or cautions before I attempt to split the tractor and replace the rear crank seal and the tranny seal.

Any specific difficulties to watch out for or any special tools needed, like in the clutch area, etc. etc. ?

Thanks !!!!!!

You are opening a can of worms, so those leaks better be bad.
A bad rear main seal usually means the rear main bearing is worn out. So a complete engine rebuild while apart that deep?
Last week was a thread about a tranny seal- again, the whole transmission needs to come apart. This is where tag sale cookie sheets come in handy

Yeeooowww,
Ok, that's what I was looking for.
No, I'm personally not ready for an engine rebuild. The tractor might be ready for one but I'm not :)
The leak is getting worse and is definitely leaking more than I'm comfortable with. But an engine rebuild.... I'm really not comfortable with that.
The clutch seems to be hanging in there, so I'm very thankful for that.
Thanks for the comment on the alignment tool. I saw them on the online store and wondered if I would need something like that.

I've cleaned up the wet spots and tightened oil pan screws, etc. I'll see what it looks like today after mowing for 3 hours and re-evaluate.

So it looks like there will be an engine rebuild in my future ???????

I did an 8N easy enough. Same principal. Pull the hood off. Wedge the front axle so the engine won't twist on it when
you pull the rear off. Few 1X4's or what ever you have. Pull the bolts that hold the two halves together. Are those
3/8 X 16 ? Size them and get the longest bolt you can find. About 4-5 inches should work. Cut the heads off. Those are
your guide pins to put it back together with. Floor jack under the back do it slides back. Bottle jack under the front
to hold it up. You can also use plywood on gravel to get this done. Use that clutch alignment tool for reassembly.
A lot of auto parts stores will rent them to you cheaper than buying one. Kevlar clutch will not freeze in place when
sitting long time. Look for a friction re-liner supplier in your area.
That's enough to get you started.
No it's not. When that pig won't slide back together. . .engage the PTO and twist it. I have a large pipe wrench for
that trick. Yes, when the end is in sight and it won't go together, you call that blessed machine many things until
you think about what Zane once said about twisting PTO's to get things aligned. Thank you Zane.

Great tips, Bruce..... and Zane !!!!
Love the guide bolt idea too !!!!

But what about this worn rear crank bearing. I take it from Tony that a leaky rear crank seal and a worn rear crank bearing go hand in hand.
Has that been your experience too? Anybody else want to chime in as well ?

Depends on the size of the leak and going into this might give you practice for the next time around.
Long, long ago in a galaxy far away. . . I brought home the wife's Fergy with the starter hanging out the side of it. The ring gear was beyond rounded off. She looked at me like I was nuts. She desired to know how it worked. I said, "Simple. Pull start it when you need it and park it when you don't." She said "Not gonna happen." So I looked at her and told her she had two choices.
One was use it as is and the other was that brand new credit card. She gave me the card. I gave it back to her with about $50 left on the credit limit. oops. Her machine fired off and ran about 45 PSI oil pressure at idle after the credit card. Kevlar clutch.
From the front to the back and few, if any, bolts left un-turned. She added the numbers and stopped counting long before I did.
She either got sick or forgot all that was done.
Your choice. Mission creep or search and destroy.

Bill I ve gone in deep.
Split the tractor, Egine on the ground in the process of stipping it to flip it to get to the crank, as a had a spun bearing, so wanting to see what condition the crank is in.... First time for an out of frame rebuild for me, so making it up as she goes... early days yet as i am pulling apart as apposed to putting back together.

This is on a ted20 though not a 30, but same principle
