have a 51 to-20, and just replaced the pto shaft to the larger 1-3/8. lost a couple gallons of lube, did have the tractor jacked way up and pointed downhill as recommended, but still lost fluid. anywho, the manual i have says use straight mineral gear oil sae 90 wt. i understand this fluid also serves the hydraulic system. is just 80-90 wt rear end lube the same as mineral oil? thx

I was wandering also what might be in there. Holds 6 gallons. A lot of guys use 15W40 when replacing, when I restored my 35 I put the GL1 back in and it is a little slow when zero out.

Would you recommend the gl1 or i could even use rotella 15-40. Not sure about rotella with the rear end gears and the trans sharing the same oil.

I think if I was going to use in cold weather I'd go with 15-40. My stepdad bought my 1955 new and I only show it. I was wandering are you going to do a bodyshop job on it? I've only had a disk and grader blade on one time since the restore and that was in 2007. It usually sets with a couple of army blankets over it until a show.

Have you loosened the drain plugs to see what comes out? Those are prone to collect water, especially if it was stored outside and the shifter boot is bad.

And not knowing what is in it, this might be a good time to change it.

Using 90 weight gear oil will be too heavy, the hydraulics will be slow in cold weather. Mineral oil is a little better, but most use 15w40 engine oil.

Wow!!! That is a beautie !!!!! Havent decided yet on what to do with the fergie. For now, i am gonna put er to work at the farm to shake the bugs out. I have a super m that has been a work in progress for several years, its been a money pit. I gotta get that one done first.

If you want the 90 wt.mineral gear oil you can buy at TSC and a good price. It will have for Old Ford transmission gear oil on jug. I use it in all my tractors but I live in Texas and don't have real cold weather and it works great.

Iam planning on draining the rest of whatever is in there and re filling. Looks like there are three drainplugs, and only one fill plud according to the manual.

I know what you mean about old tractors and money pit. I have a small fortune in the 35 but it has been in family since new and boubt if I could sell it for a third of whats in it. Another picture with the Ferguson transport box.
