Put a used 6 volt starter on a TO-30 that is converted to 12 volt. It broke 2 starter noses this week. It seems to really hit the flywheel hard. I think that is what's breaking the noses. I ordered a rebuilt 12 volt starter for it today, it's coming from a rebuild shop and don't even know what it is going to cost me. I need it! Would a bad ring gear cause that? The tractor is all painted and done.

At the top of the YESTERDAY web page I typed in .....Breaking Starter Noses On A TO 30... and then clicked on SEARCH:

Thanks John Deere D, what a difference one word makes in the search feature. I used broken instead of breaking. Now I have something to go on.

In a former life I worked at a Massey Ferguson dealership. The most common cause of broken noses on starters (1107512 - I still remember the starter number after 50+ years!) is trying to re-engage the starter before everything has stopped turning. ALWAYS wait until the engine has stopped moving after a no-start. ALWAYS let the starter stop completely before trying to start again. With Perkins it was a broken nose housing, with Fords it was a bent starter shaft. Always the same reason: Impatience.
