swinging drawbar

I took the swdb off my mf 35 and instead of putting the bolts back in I was thinking of putting rubber plugs in the bolt holes. I want to keep the holes from filling up with crud.

opinions???

thanks.

If you run in a lot of brush, cornstalks and the like I don't think rubber plugs would last. I used shorter bolts for the holes on my 8N and they work well.

The draw bar really should't be attached to the transmission with bolts . The correct way is to use double ended studs , the 'tractor ' side being UNC thread suitable for the cast iron housing , the draw bar end UNF , which allows greater tightening force to be applied .
The reason is very sound and can save an embarrassing mistake . The casting of the transmission housing at the bottom of the mount holes is relatively thin , the force able to be applied by a too long bolt is very high . Unless the bolt is very accurately sized to allow for the draw bar thickness and any washers you could quite easily pop the end right off . This results in a half inch hole directly into the oil bath of the rear end .
The same thing can happen if you put too much grease on the bolt ; or stud in this case , the hydraulic pressure breaks the casting just as easily as a bolt will .
Sometimes mud wasps can clag up the end of the hole , plugging them as you want to is a good idea to stop this and other debris from causing a similar problem .

Steve, I used 5/8" X 1" coarse threads with a lock washer. I also used some never seize on the threads.
