TO35 Charging

I have a 1957 TO35 12v system that was not charging, I put in new brushes still didn't charge. If I put a volt meter to armature lug will not read anything. I pulled hair out tracing wires for a day, I changed battery to pos. ground and everything charging is this correct for this year? I called local MF dealer an he was unable to ans.

To polarize use a wire and clip one end to battery hot cable + and just hit the A (armature) momentarily on generator. If you didn't change wire on amp gauge it should show charge. If you changed amp gauge wire and gauge shows discharge change the two wires on back of amp gauge.

Thanks will try that, I'm still lost to why wouldn't charge to start with. Before I had changed cables I had put starter/gen from my bolens 1250 an it didn't charge & I know that one dose.

I also have a cream colored 1957 that I repainted red to look like other folks Fergusons.

one thing that someone on the jeep forum I follow suggested for helping with old vehicle charging problems.

take every electrical connection loose, clean it and add a little die electric grease to the connection, as many times the charging system is working, its just not getting a good connection.

helps with slow starting problems too.

I did this with my old tractor and it has worked so far,
as sometimes the generator would charge and sometimes not, took all connections loose cleaned and treated them, now for sometime afterwards each time I start it up the needle go to charge and soon comes back to center.

starts good, lights work good, so far I am a happy camper.

might try it, not going to hurt anything, who knows you might find a wire or connection that is broken or loose and you did not know it.

Your generator will put out full power if you ground (should be positive ground system) the F "field" terminal on the generator to ground, or the pos. terminal on the battery, with the engine
running ~ 1/2 throttle. That basically bypasses the effect of the voltage regulator. If you do that, your amp gauge should increase to ~15 amps or so within a few seconds. If it don't, your
generator, or amp gauge is bad. Check the voltage across the battery when you do that, it should read ~7 volts. Often, charging problems are due to a faulty, or poorly grounded voltage
regulator, and not the generator.

Polerizing generators

Since you don't know the class of the GEN that must be determined or you may damage your regulator.
1. With GEN & Regulator all Connected
2. Loosen FAN belt so pully will rotate
3. Jumper Regulator BAT to regulator Armature, should spark, leave connected.
Does the GEN Motor(rotate)? Pully may need hand help to start Rotating. IF yes you are Polarized & Units Match, good for GO.
4. IF Gen did not motor in # 3, remove the wire from the GEN "F"ield Terminal. Connect a Jumper wire between the GEN F terminal & Ground.
Jumper Reg BAT to reg Armature, should spark, leave connected. Does the GEN Motor (rotate)? Pully may need hand help to start Rotating.
If yes you have a Class A Generator,if no go to 5
5. If Gen did not motor in # 4, Connect a Jumper wire between the GEN F terminal & Gen Armature.
Jumper Reg BAT to reg Armature, should spark, leave connected. Does the GEN Motor (rotate) ?Pully may need hand help to start Rotating.
If yes you have a class B Generator
Both the Generator & Regulator must be Matched in class. CLass A or Class B

Thanks for info. this is what I got today playing with system, I put back to neg ground and polarized gen. I then started with gen disconnected I put volt meter to Armature, I got zero volts. I then changed battery to pos ground and tested with volt meter it had 12.36volts @ 1200rpm. I'm trying to get ser, #tag clean so I can post, not sure if that will make difference for how it's wired.

lost.
have you rechecked the serial number of the tractor to be sure you have a 1957 model?

my 1957 model came with a 12 volt system and is negative ground

still has the generator with rear drive unit off the back for the tachometer, all still work fine.

a lot of changes were made to the [MHF] tractors during the years 1955-1958
