My service manual says cup grease on the gasket. I'm not sure if I can even get cup grease any more. Local parts guy suggests copper grease but I'm a bit hesitant since it seems like cup grease would burn off and copper grease would leave a film.
So what do others use?
TIA

Boy that takes me back a year or, OK....five. Six? it's been awhile. I asked John(UK) the same question. If your local parts guy cannot find cup grease, he might not be old enough to find it.
Cut to the chase.
Cup grease is nothing more than wheel bearing grease. The proper wheel bearing grease for your tractor is short fiber drum brake wheel bearing grease. Emphasis on drum brake. Disc brake is too gooey to serve your purpose for drum brakes.
I lightly coated both sides of the gasket and installed it. The wheel bearing grease just allows the gasket to slide around as you tighten it down. Do not tighten it down at night when you are tired and are not paying attention to Newton Meters versus Foot Pounds. Newton meters are higher and will cause you to strip things.
Expensive things.
Now when you attempt to remove the gasket a mere 30 minutes after installation, you will find the gasket has dried into position better than any sealer known to the automotive world and you will tear the gasket in half trying to remove it because you stripped something.
Have fun!

I use High Heat Aluminum paint. Put a coat-let dry and another coat-- 3 coats let dry then install. A old mechanic told me this years ago. I always do this and never had a problem. The paint lets it seal very good. Some gaskets come with paint from factory. The old mechanic built race engines to Cat engines. He was a expert and I never seen a bad engine he built.
