Ferguson to-30

Poster earlier up in tractor talk board. To 30 generator. It's all original 6 volt. I had non starting issues. I got a new battery and still nothing. No click no nothing. Cleaned the wires new ends everything. Nothing. After reading I just pushed harder on the shifter and it finally starts now and again. It seems the saftey starter switch is bad or not adjusted properly if that is even possible? Looking at the part online I do not understand how the rod from the shifter activates the switch. Can anyone explain that? How does the rod attach to the switch? I do have the parts books and the service manual at home but the tractor is at my dads house. How hard is it to replace? Any issues with replacing it that I should know about? Such as the rod will fall down in the bell housing never to be retrieved except to split the tractor? Any tips would be appreciated thanks, John
 
Delawaresurfman, it is actually very easy, even I can change the switch with no help. From the start: there are 4--1/2 inch head bolts that actually hold that plate on. Loosen those 4 bolts so that plate is able to be moved. Once it is loose move the plate back & forth while someone is on the tractor with the key on & has the shifter in the start position all the time. As person #2 keeps the shifter in the start position you move the plate to see if you can get the button to make contact with the rod inside. If this doesn't work take off both of the big wires on the starter button (which is on this plate you were moving) then there are two 7/16" inch heads that you remove, then take hold of those two lugs you took the big wires off of and lift it up, that is the actual switch. Most decent auto parts store will have new switches. Hopefully that is your only problem.
 
No don't worry about dropping anything into the bell housing, at least until after you pull the switch out if you have to pull the switch. The rod part that activates the starter button is on a concentric? When the shift lever is pushed the thing pushes up on the starter button to make contact. If you have to take the button out you will understand very easily how it works. The "Rod" does not "Attach" to the switch it is just in there. Sorry I can't explain it any more. I understand the "TE" has the capability of something can drop into the bell housing when removing and replacing this switch but not the "TO". When I replaced my TO 30 switch I went to NAPA and got a second switch as the first switch was an after market switch and the difference between the two was tremendous as far as the spring inside. The NAPA button was a much superior button. I hope this helps.
 
Thank you Richard. In looking over my parts book better and using this sites search feature I've found out those things. Mine seems like possibly a throw length problem and I see in the parts manual the holder has slotted bolt holes. So hopefully I can just adjust that holder to get the correct throw length. If not a new switch may be in order. By looking at things and thinking, since I have to push very hard on the shifter I'm thinking that I should move the holder toward the front of the engine so that it engages sooner. Would you think this is correct?
 
Tom, that's a big help. It looks as though their are different model Fergies in those pictures, As Richard mentioned. In the To-30 pictures and the diagram I can see nothing can fall into the tranny. Also by looking at the diagram it furthers my suspicion that the bracket should move forward to get more lift on the starter button. Thanks everyone I'll update with the solution when things are working better for me.
 
I have no idea on that. I left mine where it was and took the switch out and replaced it and it worked wonderfully just by getting a new switch. I had not become a member when I did that so looking things up on the internet was not in my bag. Maybe someone else will answer you.
 
I adjusted the switch holder today. Slid it forward and re tightened it up. Seems to be working much better. Thanks for the help and suggestions,
