I had a TE 20 tractor and I did not use it for a couple of years. It sat in the barn for that
time. I sold it to a guy for use in his food plots and he said that it has started to turn the
exhaust cherry red when he runs it now. I never had that problem with it. What would cause
this? He rebuilt the carb and I don't know what else. I told him it may be the timing is off
or a carb adjustment would this be right? Thanks Ivan

That's typically caused by retarded ignition timing. Check the point setting first, the centrifugal advance, then set the timing.

Fuel mixture can have some effect. Be sure the choke is fully opening, the air cleaner is clean (the inside mesh, not just the oil bowl). After setting the timing, set the engine at full governed speed, turn the main jet adjustment in until the engine falters, back it out about a turn. Bring the engine to idle, quickly open the throttle. It should come up to speed without hesitation, a puff of black smoke is acceptable as long as it clears up.

Also be sure the fan belt is tight and not running in the bottom of the pulley, and the radiator is free of debris.

Retarded ignition timing (either improperly set initial timing or stuck centrifugal advance)and/or to lean fuel/air mixture.

Heres an update. His neighbor works on old tractors and he checked the timing and found it was in the points. A slight adjustment and it run fine now. He used it all afternoon across the road from me pulling a disk. Thanks for the help
