Opinions needed.....oil

The first time I ever saw '0W-15' was in Edmonton. It must be for sale for a reason? Straight 20 in the summer is dangerous. Straight 30 in winter where you are... is not a good idea.
This is a diesel right? Use a multi weight diesel safe oil for now, and a winter weight one after October or whenever winter comes...
I don't understand about the CAV pump- what are you intending to do with that thing? If the engine runs, don't mess with it.

0w-15.....it does get used around here, mostly on very small engines used for snow removal.
I live about 20 minutes outside edmonton as it happens. We can have snow fall in every month except Aug, and it normally starts accumulating in November and melts by the middle of April.

I actually use 0w50 synthetic on my ford 7.3L Diesel year round, it'll start pretty much at any temp if the glow plugs are all working.

This is a diesel, not used in the winter at all. Have 2 other te20s for winter use.
I have diesel 15w40, but I think that may be overkill.

As for the CAV pump, this entire maintenance session has started because I needed to change the fuel filters. The manual states to check the oil in the injection pump, and top up as needed, however they omitted to state how to check, or what to top up with.

Good 15-40 oil should work. I use it in my diesels but for winter you may need different oil. Depends on how cold it gets. We had a Simms pump on a Ford 6700 years ago and we drained oil in pump every time we changed engine oil. Most pumps lubricates from the diesel in pump. Don't know about your pump.

Hey Miner, remember when your trailer broke down in Ohio? Well, where Thomas lives is about 3 or 4 times colder. On a nice day. Without wind. Wanta interesting Sheldon Cooper kinda fact? 40 below is the same in the states as Canada!! and 15 weight ain't light enough to spin a pocket watch. ask me how I know???
As far as the pump, I would just press the hand pump a few times to top off it off, diesel tech will know how to mothball one. IF started in winter you will need to add treatment and burn #1 anyway right? Zero weight etc etc. But yeah, I would think till winter your jug of 15w-40 is fine.
Miner needs a field trip up there just after Christmas... he'll bring a light jacket.... then go shopping at the Bay!!!

For the injector pump you will see a drain cock on the side of the pump, open and left the diesel/oil run out. Above the drain cock there will be 2 scews holding an inspection plate on. Remove the plate and fill oil in there until the clean oil runs out of the drain hole. Then wait for the oil to stop drainikg. Refit the cover and you're done. The oil lubricates the injector cam.

(quoted from post at 21:36:11 07/26/16) Servicing my TEF20 with standard 20c diesel motor, what engine oil should I be using, I was eying the straight 30w sitting on the shelf.
Also, do I drain and refill oil in the CAV injection pump?

From a CAV workshop manual,
"The Pump is flange mounted to the engine. It is oil tight , and during operation all moving parts are lubricated by fuel oil under pressure, so that no additional lubrication system is required. Pressure maintained within the pump housing prevents the ingress of dust, water and foreign matter."

Do not put oil into the housing. When you change the fuel filters you will need to bleed the air out of the pump housing using the handle on the lift pump as well as the lines at the injectors when spinning the motor over.

If your engine has glow plugs I have found it easier on the starter to remove them and then spin the engine over with the starter to bleed the injector lines.

Thanks for the information, I must have an
oddball pump as I have no lift pump. I found
5 places to bleed the filters and pump, and
then the 4 injectors too. Runs very well
with a new filter installed, and the second
filter element taken apart and cleaned.

Not always that cold up here.....we only hit
minus 40 for a day time high maybe 3-4 times
a year.

" Edmonton average daily temperatures range
from a low of −10.4 ?C (13.3 ?F) in January
to a summer peak of 17.7 ?C (63.9 ?F) in
July"

We have been seeing lots of 75F to 80F last
month or so.

Well I stand corrected. That pump does have oil in it. That must be a much older version. The newer CAV pumps are an like a Stanadyne pump which does have any oil in it.
