TO35 Hydraulics

My hydraulics are very weak. With a 5' shredder it will barley lift the front. I replaced the relief valve and played a little with the control valve position. That is when a got it to move a little. I see hydraulic running down from the cylinder area. Serial No 147050. I see on this site rings for the later models and a seal kit. What do I need to order? Next step is to rebuild the pump?

With the engine revved up, lift lever in the raise position and a load on the arms, take a good look up through the inspection covers, see for sure where the oil is coming from.

If there is a large flow from the cylinder, the seals, and possibly the cylinder, are bad. A small leak is normal, as those are steel rings, not a perfect seal. If the cylinder is leaking, need to take it apart first to see what all is needed. Could be just rings, but commonly the cylinder will be scoured and need replacing. This will also be a good time to replace the upper link boot, which can be difficult to disassemble because of rust, may need additional parts there too.

There is also a stand pipe that brings oil to to the cover from the pump. There are orings at each end of the pipe. Oil from the top is the top oring, oil swirling below the oil level is the lower oring. Both can be changed from above by removing the stand pipe cover and lifting the pipe out.

Typical symptom of a failing pump is a jerky lift and hold. The valves commonly fail causing uneven and reduced flow of oil. If the pump is steady, it is probably OK.

On this same topic, my 1955 TO-35 has a leaking lift cylinder. It is an early 35, I don't know if it has the 2.5 or 3 inch cylinder. I'm sure it has never been touched so I am planning to put a new cylinder, piston, and rings on it as well as replace any other seals and gaskets in the vicinity. How should I proceed? I worked as an auto tech for many years and have all the common hand and power tools. Is the weight of the lift cover the main obstacle to removing it? Do they tend to be stuck on there pretty good?

Yes, they are heavy. Here is a video of a tool that helps otherwise I've used a engine lift.

Thanks. Does anyone know if the 3" lift cylinder will fit my tractor, even if it originally had the 2.5"? I figure it would be best to go with all new parts. The 3" cylinder is a lot cheaper too.
