TO-20 ring gear

so, looks like the ring gear on my TO-20 has been pushed back far enough that the started will not engage anymore. So, if I split the tractor and get in there, what else
should I be doing or replacing inside? Thanks.

Is this a recurring problem?

If not, and it hasn't come completely off, can you reach through the starter hole and pry it back on?

Is this a 12 volt conversion? I believe you can have 12 volt field windings put in the starter, then it won't hit so hard and knock the gear off.

I converted it to 12 volt about 15 years ago. I thought about trying to put a pry bar into the starter hole and tap it forward. Problem is that may take a whole bunch of taps (65 years worth, right?)

knock mine off a couple of times bumping the starter while shifting out of reverse while on a hill.
Last time I added a 6 volt starter solenoid with the shifter start switch and new ignition key starting contact in series. Now it requires pressing the shifter up and turning the key to operate the starter.
