number i cylinder ?

Your, uh...use to working on what? Peugeot or Saab? Saab just puts their engines in backwards.
Peugeot IS backwards. Other than that, most typical V series engines have #1 on the cylinder head
that is the furthest forward.

I'm use to working on American inline 6 , v-6 and v-8 , all in front . I was not sure since the Ferguson was not American made as far as i know. Thanks JIM

Bruce, that reminds me of something that happened many years ago when I worked at a marina.

I was down in the boat house one day, there was a man working on his 283 Chriscraft inboard. He had it cross wired, cranking away, backfiring, kicking back... He was cussing away, getting nowhere!

I stopped and asked if he needed help, told him all it was is a backward mounted Chevrolet, look at it from the other end, call the right rear #1, then it's 18436572.

He never looked up, just told me "There are only so many combinations, I'll figure it out!"

I doubt that he did, didn't have that much battery left! LOL

OOhhhh yea!! I just looked up the number of combinations of 8........40,320. Yes sir, he's out of battery and still setting there. Ha!!

Steve,Lucky the marina guy didn't have twin engines, because one runs clockwise and the other
counter clockwise to offset each other, then he would of really been confused!

18436572 I believe is also used on a few Chrysler engines such as the 318. I have heard Ford used it, if you changed the cylinder numbers and direction of rotation on the cap. I have never investigated that one. Chevy was nice with the numbers and firing order on the intake manifold.

Most of the time, it doesn't matter whether you start at the rear
or front. The firing order will be the same. As long as the
plug you start with fires at the correct time is the primary
concern.
