installing steering arms

Ha all

I removed the RHS steering arm, it took some hitting with a hammer to dislodge the ball joint from the steering arm and spindle arm.

Any hints on getting the ball joints back into the arms without having a ball joint tool. tried hammer and piece of wood but these things seem rather tight. a vice with a hole for the bolt to stick through seems my next option. Unless someones has a fergie top tip for me.

Google tells me to use a pinch bar to cause friction to stop the ball joint spinning while doing up nut, but this seems for control arms on cars etc. :)

Usually you fit the ball joint to the tie bar and place both ends in the holes, then with a pry bar just lever down on the end and tighten the nut...The front is easy as you can lever under the generator or something on the engine and even sit on the
bar....The rear is not just as easy, but a good pry bar behind the brake or clutch pedal and lean your shoulder against it should do the trick...........Sam

Were the threads damaged during removal?

If so, clean them up, get the nut to where it will screw on by hand BEFORE trying to assemble it. You can hold the stud with vice grips with it off, screw the nut on and off a few times until it loosens up.

What you don't want is to get the nut part way on with it assembled, then can't get it tight, can't get it off... End up having to cut it and buy a new end.

Ok thanks boys I ll give it a crack, and good point re getting them stuck half way. PS the threads are good :)
