looked at this 35 yesterday. ser no 162xxx 12v with gen
good:
all oils looked ok
ran very good
pto spun as expexted

not so good:

hyd does NOT work lift arms showed absolutely no movement at all

raised quadrant lever, nothing. not even a burp

hyd oil seemed a bit thin to me

without taking anything apart is there a way to see if the hyd pump is shot???

thanks

Only with a gauge and test port. I am willing to bet the hyd was full of water and the press relief valve rusted and broke. $35 fix . The valve is at the bottom of the pump under all that water.
Not the first one to do that. I would keep that in mind and then tell him the pump is probably shot and it will probably cost me $6 or 800 bucks to fix it if I have to find a new pump and start crying a river. Then reluctantly drag it home and suspect I got it right 'cuz those pumps are pretty simple.
Not going to bite? Pull the side PTO cover, stick your hand in, run it down the linkage into the slop and see if the linkage is hooked up. No? 'Cuz it's rusted-busted. Yes? It's got other problems.
Just make sure the machine is not running when you reach into it's guts. You, uh...might loose all your fingers if it's running.
if that is a good price in your neighborhood, go easy on the waterfall, lest the seller spit the hook.
Last tractor came home to me because I was the first one there and made a non refundable down payment locking it in for a real cheap price. I should have paid about $1,000 more. Thank you God!

supposedly it has been kept all its life (one family owner)in a shed out of the weather. I offered 800 for it they respectively declined.

Is the steering good? That can be an expensive repair. If it is good, and you think the hydraulics are the only problem, I'd bump the offer somewhat. Like Bruce says, chances are it's not that bad a fix. I just bought one for about the price you offered, and my hydraulics are great, but the steering box is real bad. I'd trade with you in a heartbeat. Steering boxes are $500 and up if you can find one.

$800 was a good offer for what is there. If it was all working with a dual range trans and worn out tires as shown, crumply sheet metal I might do 17 tops with clean oil, no smoke, good charging...etc.
17 is the top I would go and that would only be if I had a real need. Too many other better, newer, more power machines available in the same $25 price range.

steering is good.

my problem is if the hyd are not an easy fix the tractor is 3 1/2 hours from my house and tools. it's close to our place in upstate PA.
