Massey Ferguson 398 isn't charging
Back of the alternator has a 3 prong connector, looking around on the web, looks like (1) D+ and (2) B+ terminals

Want to troubleshoot before I buy an alternator

Assuming (we all know where that gets you) the D+ should have 12V+ on it to excite the alternator...and the 2 B+ are the output to the batteries...sound right?

So if I've got the 12v at the D+ terminal, it should charge?

And the replacement alternators have that 3 terminal connector, but also have a large B+ stud...would I just cover that up and ignore it?
Thanks

Fred

Yip just ignore the large stud terminal.....there are only two large spade terminals for the feed to the battery as one will not carry the load. They are both joined together further down the loom.......Sam

The replacement alternators say they produce 45-50 amps.

Would it hurt to run another wire, say 10 or 8 ga, from the stud to the batteries? Leaving the plug connected?

That would give me 3 wires carrying the charge.

Thanks

Fred

Put the new alternator on, works fine, thanks for the info.

Did not run a separate wire from the big stud, but did order a new 3 wire connector as I could see where the old one had gotten hot at some point.

Thanks

Fred
