water temperature gauge

By the end of last year the temp gauge was working now and then so I decided to pick up a new one. Before installing the new one I boiled a pot of water to ensure that it works and did the same with the old one. Both worked fine with the same exact temperature. Both models are with the temp numbers not the color bars. The puzzling part is that I put the old one back in and waited for the thermostat to open and checked the gauge and no reading. Put the new one in and it read 170. I put the old one back in a pot of boiling water and worked fine again then put in back in the tractor and is now working fine. I checked the line and there is no kink in it. It was screwed in very tight ( if that has any bearing on it working) when I first removed it. I just snugged it up when I put it back in and it is now working fine. Any thoughts? Would overtightening it at the housing cause the line to kink at that point?

I wouldn't think over tightening the bulb would cause it to read low. If anything it would cause it to read high if the bulb were crushed.

I'm wondering more about the dash end. If the mount bolts were over tightened it may have bound the works, but even that is doubtful.

Strange...

I never removed the old gauge from the dash mount just from the thermostat housing when I tested it. It is strange but its working fine now. Thanks Steve.
