Can anyone give me the going rate for a headgasket replacement on TO35. When the shop called me back he said its probably the liner and gave me a quote for the liner for $3100 $3500. seems kind of high.

There is a big difference in replacing a head gasket and going into the liners!

That price would be high for just a head gasket.

Went back and reread the original post of antifreeze in the oil. From what you described, that does sound like a liner oring leaking. Unless they dropped the pan and pressure tested it, they are going for the worst case. To prevent a comeback, they are going to pull the liners and replace the orings.

But, if the engine has a lot of hours on it, chances are they will find more problems. Don't know how much you want to spend, but this could easily turn into a complete overhaul, which would exceed the original quote.

The other option would be to have them reassemble it with existing parts. It would be a shame to have it that close and not go ahead with the rebuild, but the price is already near the value of the tractor!

"Close to thew value..." Unless your keeping it for your lifetime and you know what you have versus what your getting. That explains how I got upside down in her TO-20 machine in a nano second. A split nano second.
$3500 would be a rebuilt engine complete with a warranty in my book.

One of the previous posts mentioned that the tractor sitting over the winter the antifreeze in the pan could have settled to the bottom of it and it could be just a head gasket. (hoping for a little luck) Its a tough decision, the tractor ran great all last summer. Never burnt any oil. plugs were fairly clean, and temperature was always around 180 or so while bush hogging. Has new rear tires, front are good and the lift works great. Really haven't had any problems with it till now. Really don't know which way to go.

Did you ever think of trying a tube of 'Steel Seal' in the rad? Guarenteed to seal a head gasket or even a cracked block.....Read and follow the instructions and it usually works...LONG WAY OFF THE PRICE YOU WERE QUOTED AND WORTH A
TRY!....Sam

Where'd you go? a Masaratti dealership? Even at $100 an hour, this is a one day job at worst. Some people can do it in a couple hours. Easier than doing a head in a car engine.
If you got o-ring or cracks or something else going on- all bets are off, but not 4 digits for a head gasket as others here have said. And as Sam mentioned, just pour in a jar of Barr's leak stop and see if things improve. Where you are, the winter can dislocate anything, it maybe don't leak at all in this weather now.
Get on you tube and see what others have gone thru.

I tried the Bars Leak copper block sealer/head gasket sealer. Seems to be holding up. What scares me about it is the posting on what could happen if she pops while working and the clogging of the radiator. That price I was given was by a restoration shop near me. When I explained what I found he thinks it could be the liner and O-rings. Another shop, ( a Massey dealer) said the price would be no where near that just for the head gasket. Waiting for his call for a pick up and diagnosis.
And yes I do want to keep it till I kick the bucket. I'm 65 now hope its not too soon. I'm a city boy who retired and moved to farm country in upstate NY and am enjoying this tractor hobby. Didn't think it would be this expensive, but don't have much to do other than mow the lawn and bush hog.

Armand, I have done that job, and can be done in 8-10 hrs. with no loader to take off, A basic overhaul kit on this sight with everything you need, liners, piston's,bearings and gaskets
is$306.00, So 10 hrs. @ $100.00 per hr. is $1,3o6.oo, Your on the east coast and if they can't rob you they don't want to be bothered. When our trucks break down over there the cost for
repairs is always double or triple as compared to Ohio area. I don't know what the shop rate is around here as I've have never put anything in a shop for repair in my life lol.-Ed

Ed your right about that. They do tend to rob you around here. Last week my wife's car engine light came on and the code was for a small evap leak. My regular mechanic , who is very reasonable couldn't check it because he dose not have he smoke machine and suggested the GMC dealer in the next town. Well $80 for the smoke test and $309 for the gas tank filler pipe that was porous causing the code to be thrown.. I had no choice because she couldn't pass inspection until the repair was done. It was a lot worse when I lived in the Big Apple

I found another tractor/truck repair shop close to me so after the holiday I'll decide between the massey dealer and the other shop I just found. I'll post what happens to let you guys know how things go. Massey is supposed to call this week and I going to stop by the other guy and check things out. And thanks for all the responses from everybody. Hoping for the best.
