TO20 exhaust popping under load

I have a TO20 and am having issues with the exhaust popping when under load. The engines purrs when it sits at any engine speed. When i give it some throttle it pops a little. If i drive it, it will pop quit a bit. When in 4th gear driving down the road it almost sounds like a johnny popper. I have played with timing and that has not helped. I am just curious where i should start to look and or check. Thank you in advance.

Look for the obvious first, plugs, wires, dist cap, points, dist wear.

Check out the valve train. Remove the valve cover and start it up, watch and listen. If it's popping out the intake, there is an exhaust valve not opening, flat cam, bent pushrod, backed off adjuster. Also look for broken springs, broken retainer, check the lash clearance.

I have an 8N Ford that had a ticking noise near manifold/muffler connection. It sounded ok at idle but made noise under load. I found a corner blown out of the manifold gasket at lower rear corner by exhaust outlet. New manifold gasket set cured the problem.

I've also seen misadjusted valves or a timing problem cause popping in the exhaust.

I had a similar issue a few years back with my TO-30
I thought I need to go back over everything
I took my time and I went to re set the points and just by luck I
noticed the one side of the point contact moved I took them out and sure
enough the one little pad was loose it was pressed in wrong
so I replaced with knew set and Bingo it ran like a million bucks.

Just a thought.

Thanks guys i will start with all of that and get back with you. I really appreciate all the insight. I love this lil grey tractor and want to keep it running as long as possible.

Hay H20. I just had the same problem and it took me a bit to sort.

I installed a new coil, as the spark on the Ht lead looked weak and it was compared to the new coil, but the running badly espcially when i drove it continued.

HOWEVER i believe the main problem was the fuel blockage i had. The sediment bowl inlet out of the tank was full of rusty bits, so not enough fuel flow. I DID NOT think lack of flow would cause the problem i was seeing. but it did

So open the valve on the bottom of the carby and make sure you get good flow for about a min.

So check fuel, spark, assuming points are set correctly

Thanks i have checked my points and timing 2 days ago. The points where off a little but it did not take care of the popping. I will check fuel flow next, that's a good idea, thank you. I will also be checking my valves as well. But i would like to get my garden all done before i tear into that, because she is running now and need the garden in by memorial day. Again thanks for the help and i will advise when i get updates.
