TEA20 burbing and backfiring

Hi All

Being reading over post with people with similar problem.

Mine backfires when i deaccelerate. I have done compression test they are within 5 psi of each other, so recon no bad valves.

I have static timed it, it ran worse, like this not matter where you have the timing it backfires and seems to change a bit

I have had a dwell meter on the distributor. The dwell stays constant while revving, which is what it should do i believe

BUT i can turn the rotor back and forth in the distrubutor, but it does not spring back to the centre, Is this normal or should it spring back. Lucas 34A distributor. As i want to make sure the advance is working correctly.

Next is condensor then coil. from what i have read it sounds like an electrical problem.

The centrifugal advance should spring return when released. Likely the springs under the weights are rusted
away or broken.

Is it running bad, or just backfiring? If it's exhaust backfire, are there any exhaust leaks? Could just be
air getting drawn into the exhaust causing the unburned fuel to ignite. Might try leaning the main fuel jet a
little.

Check the throttle linkage spring too. If it is gummed up, she won't move quick enough cutting petrol and timing de- vancing ? at the same time...
yeah, clean the insides of the bottom of the dizzy too. My little centif springs in there- all of my tractors, are so clean and oiled up they sound like tappets clicking.. but they start and run good...sooo...

cheers boys.

Tony good to see you remembered what a dizzy was....

ITs running rough, think it might be running a bit rough as the plugs where a bit fouled....

Sounds like ill check out the springs in the dizzy, it does look a little crudy in there

:)

pcp20us, Tony will never forget what a dizzy is, he looks in the mirror every day. Now who was it that told me to say that? That wasn't nice was it Tony?

Tony are you filling dizzy? :D ? :)

Righto, one broken spring down in the dizzy advance mechanism. I replace it with the best i could find, it was a little weaker. As i could nt find one at bare co etc....

The lower deck of the dizzy is one place few ever venture... like the wop wops inbacka beyond. Glad you found it. Good on ya mate!
Just wait till Richard attends a FENA meet in Oz... his hat falls up off his head, coins fall up outta his pockets... and his mates 'knock him up in the morning' ...then he'll know about dizzy...
I know he's a kiwi, but is the 'Arch Wizard of Cantebury' still around? I had a coffee with him one time... my shout of course... so was the rest of my pipe tobacco pouch... but he'd give Richard a head spinning insight into the southern hemisphere....

Righto fix advance spring in the dizzy. did not seem to be the problem
Have it running good at idle.
Point gap good.
Fuel flow good out of carby

Had it out today it would backfire thru exhaust on deaccleration, cannot seem to stop this even with adj the timing.

After about 20 or 30 mins it started backifing thru the intake and exhaust and ran like a dog then just quit.

So i am thinking thats got to be something electrical like a coil breaking down when hot.

Its 12v tractor with a 12 volt coil on it.

There is some sideways movement in the dizzy shaft, but dont see why this would cause this problem.. this thing is certainly testing my patience
:)

Wow. I like to try all the free options first, but I guess a coil, condenser, new cap- running out of ideas. Can't be timing or gov at this point, that sloppy diz shaft- possibly, but seems worse as heat builds up??? .... so coils and condensors back on top- petrol's not boiling is it???

Ok update and issue fixed.

Replaced the coil, I now have a better spark out of the coil and no hesitation when opening throttle. so looked like my coil was not working 100%:D

However it did play up again, so checked the fuel flow out of carby, it was good but then stopped, I had a block in the two way valve (ted20) at the bowl. so cleaned this and the tank out. and all seems better...

Thanks for your helpand words of wisdom.... :D

So? Did I respond to the other post too soon? Are those gov springs acting right? 60 years next to a red hot manifold can't do the tension any good...

Govnor springs seems to be all right. The tension spring of the water housing could do with replacing as i could nt get the spring hook to touch the metal piece coming of the u bolt setup.

Governor spring gap needs setting but thats for another day.
