Adjusting Valve Tappets Z134

How do most of you adjust the tappets. I rebuilt my last engine and set them as always and I don't like the sound. I always adjust .015 when the rocker arm starts up as I turn engine over. It always works. Is this right or wrong.

I watch the valve on the overlap period. For example when the # 4 exhaust is almost closed and the intake starting to open I set both valves on # 1 cylinder. Pistons 1 and 4 are at TDC the same time, same with 2 and 3. So if you want to set # 3 watch # 2 valves, setting # 4 watch # 1. Works on six cylinder engines too, 1 and 6, 2 and 5, 3 and 4, each pair are at TDC together. Does not work on three cylinder engines though as each is at TDC by itself.

I would wonder if some of the springs lost their tension? Not broken, but just now too slow to react- or follow without a pause.

Thanks Richard It worked great. Sounds good. I was told before to adjust like you said but always adjusted different. Adjust your way from now on. Maybe Tony learned something to.

Nope. Not me. That's the way I always did em. Atleast on 'merican valves.
Not English engines. With no timing marks or nothing but a good guess... then it is like Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson on the Bounty...
MISTER MINER SUR!!!! 'prepare to loosen valve number one exhaust- heave whilst yard arm's bearing at 210 degrees a sow sow wess, abaft the port stern, beware all hands the starboard beam'... 'rr rr -gauges at the ready sur...steady as she goes capin Bly......rrrrr....'
But... they came out spot on the first try, both the petrol 20-85 and the accursed son of a scurvy sea dog 23c.... as if I knew what I was doing!!
So perhaps I'll put in for another stripe an extra grog ration.... rrrrr

Just remember, if you need a deal on Rustoleum Tony's your man. I've got his Standard 23C head at the machine shop now getting new valve seats installed. Hope to get it running again this summer...
