to 35 not starting

My TO35 doesnt seem to be taking up gas. If I choke it it starts and runs, but won't stay running. Didn't have any problems like this before. Any ideas welcome?

If it starts with choke pulled, then you are getting fire,
Normally if it runs better with the choke pulled, then the carb is stopped up,
I would start with a good carb cleaning and use a good quality carb kit, not a cheap TSC kit,

Do you have a inline fuel filter between cutoff valve and carb, if not you might think about installing one, must be metal canister free flow filter if you do,
Remember the inline fuel line to carb has a filter in it at the elbow as fuel goes into carb, do not forget to check and clean this filter,

Most of these old fuel tanks have all kinds of crap flowing around in them after all these years, you must also insure your cutoff valve bowel has a screen above the bowel,
May have to take cut off valve off and wash out tank to stop the rust,

Let us know how it works out,

When right an old TO35 will idle at 350-375 rpms

Thanks for the info! I took the elbow off the carb and cleaned the screen. Tractor started and ran fine for a bit with the choke pushed in, but then it just shut down again. My gas tank is leaking, so I know a bunch of crap probably got picked up by the carb. How hard is it to clean/rebuild the carb?

That is a hard question to answer,
It all depends on your tools and your level of mechanical ability

If you have never rebuilt a carb before you might take it off and take it to a local Ferguson dealer,
However, sounds like you are wasting your time rebuilding the carb if you do not clean the tank and add a good quality inline fuel filter,

I agree, the tank is the cause of the problem. I discovered a leak last fall, should've already fixed it. It's a pretty good leak, can you recommend any type of sealer, or songwriter to buy a new tank? the inline filter, is that something I can buy at TSC? I'm a decent mechanic, but I have a buddy who can rebuild the carb for me. Are the kits sold by this site pretty good? I've bought several parts and manuals from this site. Good prices and service.

People on this site know so much more than me, I hate to give any advice on repairing a leaking fuel tank, so dangerous,
If you get the tank repaired and cleaned out you may not need the additional inline fuel filter,
Many do not like them as they are another source of leakage,

But if you can not get the tank clean, its about the only choice,

Good luck and stay safe,

Based on what you said, I would strongly consider a new tank. By time you find someone to weld, clean, and coat the inside of your present tank you will have spent most of the money for a new one. Overhauling carb is not a tough job. Chances are all it really needs is new needle and seat and clean the main jet and replace gaskets and washers. The main jet requires a deep well 3/8 socket, best if from a 1/4 drive as they are thinner wall sockets. No other special tools. Just remove choke rod and governor rod from levers on back of carb and unbolt it. I think top bolts are 7/16. Four screws to remove and you are inside. Make sure float has no holes and no fluid inside it. Remove main jet and clean it. Replace needle and seat. Do it on clean table or desk. Easy. There is more to full overhaul, but i doubt you need more based on what you said. As Max said in his last post, inline filter is not necessarily advised if you have a clean tank and line. There are disadvantages to inline filter on gravity flow system. Hope that helps.
