T20 paint question

On my hybrid T20(has a z120 continental not the standard motor), as I'm stripping it down I'm finding yellow paint underneath. Was yellow used as a primer before the grey was put on or was this something that happened during its life?
Serial number is 28652 and the motor number is z120.32299

I can't help you with your paint question .
I will say the first 48,000 TE20's were built with Continental Z120 engines.
The 48,000 # is from tractordata. The Standard Vanguard engine was not ready for production
early on. Good luck!

My guess is that was painted yellow for one of the highway departments. The tractors used Red Oxide primer on all of the tractors as far as I have heard. Then there is always the possibility someone did paint it yellow as they liked it better.

Is that cast steel or al-u-min-e-um? It looks like the old greenish yellow primers on aircraft sheetmetal. If it is a steel casting, then Richard is right about the red lead- which didn't stick to alloys as good as the greenish yellow stuff. As well as being too heavy to get off the ground.
Duner is right about the Z120, which is why I wonder how/why a Lucas got on there. Seems castings from Detroit or Coventry, engines from Chicago, would be assembled in Toronto with dependable Delco stuff. must have been commonwealth politics at is worst.... if your bolt holes and flywheel can take a delco, just put it on.

Zinc Chromate is the primer used on aluminum casting, yellow color (civilian market) and green mostly on military products. I have some in gray on my shelf.

I once had a TE20 tractor with the Z120,all the electrics on it were Lucas. I believe the tractor was
assembled in the UK.
