Draft Boot Replacement

Hey Fellas,

Got my draft control assembly outta the TO-35. Not so bad, lots of heat and a big hammer. Need a new nut for sure, Now....how do I remove the clevis from the threaded rod? I can grab the clevis, but the rod is within the spring. The cup at the end just spins since it is not attached in any way.

It'll likely require rust-bust and heat....I just need to be able to turn it!

Thanks!

I never could get mine to come apart. Ended up reaching between the spring coils with the Sawzall and cutting the rod. For me that was the easiest way since I could make a new rod. I would have probably tried a little harder otherwise.

That is a tricky reassembly as I recall, getting the spring adjusted. Do you have a shop manual?

I have the I&T manual which is vague at best......I can't cut it since I don't have the tooling to make a new one. Might have to weld something to the end of it to hold it....

Last one I did I welded the inside of the cup to the rod end, then used a pipe wrench on the cup. After replacing the draft boot I deburred all the rough edges and re-used the assembly.

An ordinary hand held hacksaw will reach between the spring and cut the rod....It can then be welded together and reused....remove the rubber bung from the outer end and you will see a cross-slot in there with a locking pin....that pin has to be punched out so as it will unscrew.........
