6 volt or 12 volt

How can I tell whether my system is 6 or 12 volt? I bought a new 6 volt battery because the old ones was dead, but it didn't work. It cranked with the old battery, which looked to me like a 12 volt, but was very weak. The guy I bought it from said it was still 6 volt, but I'm not sure

There are a few things to look for. A six volt battery only has 3 caps on the top of the battery, 12 has six. If your system was converted to 12
volt you may see a resistor sitting somewhere between the coil and ignition wire. If not the coil may have been changed to 12 volt and it would
say that. Also 6 volt systems are positive ground not negative. If your engine isn't cranking well with a new battery, check that all of your wires
are in good shape and either 0 or 1 gauge for 6 volts.

Is there an alternator or a generator on the tractor? If you have an alternator then it should be 12 volt negative ground. If you have a generator, it could still be 6 volt although a 12 volt generator is a possibility.

Also if you have lights you can take any of the light bulbs to an auto parts store and they will tell you if it is a 6 or 12 volt bulb.

Thanks for the info! It is definitely a 12 volt battery; I thought it was, but your reply confirmed it.
