Well the Delco starter on our TO-30 called it quits. The commutator had no more grooves in it and it looked like it was turned on a lathe. It is a 6V starter that has been run on a 12V system since before I bought it in 1996.
I took it to our local auto electric shop and my choices were a $140 new replacement from the "land of almost right", or a $240 American made(supposedly)version, or a rebuild of the existing one including a new armature for around $200. I choose the last option but I"m almost sure the replacement parts will probably be made in China. It"s supposed to be ready by this coming Thursday.
Anyone have experience with the "new" starters, either Chinese or supposedly American made ones? How about rebuilds? I hate to quit on a US Made Delco that has served this "54 TO-30 for 62 years so I hope this rebuild will get the old girl many more years of service.
