57 ferguson to35 distributor shim size

It would appear that when I rebuilt the
distributor on my 57 Ferguson to35 with
Continental z134 engine that I put the wrong
shims in it and have now marred up the
distributor drive gear on my camshaft Beyond
repair. Can anyone help me find out what
size shims should be placed on the
distributor shaft so that I do not have this
problem again when I put my new camshaft in

I wouldn't think the wrong shims would cause the gears to go bad. You just want to eliminate excess clearance but not too tight as to cause binding.

Unless there was a major problem with the distributor, like a spun out bushing, wallowed housing, bent shaft, etc. Do a careful inspection, I don't think it can be assembled wrong.

I think I would do a trial fit of the distributor with the new cam and gear before putting the oil pan or the cam drive gear on. Make sure the distributor gear is centered on the cam center line, no binding or excess clearance. Hand turn the cam and watch and feel what's happening. Once the cam gear is on check the end clearance and that the gears are centered. There should always be some clearance between the gears. If there are tight spots or the clearance is not equal, something is wrong.
