pulling stumps mechanical advantage and more

Hi

Ok we all know to pull you need to do it from below the axle so you dont end up on your lid.

Watching some u tube vids for using mechanical advantage(pulley setups) to pull stumps. this setup looks like there is some investment in the pulleys etc needed and complicated, but impressive video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRTIwWUg4fc

Also this vid, which seems like a easy setup. I am guessing stupms are easier to pull out in an upwords direction than across. but in this next vid will this change the pulling direction on the tractor so more likely to lift front wheels.

Also this is a good vid for comparision.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRTIwWUg4fc. fast forward to the good bits as he rambles on tad

what i remember from physics is that using the pulley setup would put less puliing force on the tractor than the single pull method.

The stumps that they pulled were small shallow rooted trees and looked like wet ground. Try that with an oak or hickory an heavy ground( Clay).

Exactly my thoughts! They are in wet ground over a hardpan layer that the roots couldn't penetrate

Not saying it's a bad thing tho, if they were rooted too secure the rope wouldn't have taken it or the chain and that snatch block would have headed right for the driver of that small tractor!

Note of safety from someone who has used an old jeep winch,
Safety tip:
Any time you are pulling hard on a cable, rope or steel, if any part of the hookup breaks, it will come right at you at full speed,

Safety note: Place a coat blanket, anything you have over the cable, the heavier the better, if the cable does break, the cover will pull the
cable to the ground as it come at you at full speed,

For those that did not do this, have seen windshields broken as the jeep operator sit in the seat operating the winch when something in the
cable hookup broke,

Stay safe,

Pulling from below the axle is NO guarantee the the tractor will not rear and back flip. Just takes a bit harder pull and a bit
more likely to spin the rear wheels first. Pulling anything solid like a stump is fraught with danger. Spend some time first and
dig to expose roots on opposite side to tractor and cut them off.

Yeah fellas enough with the doom and gloom. Was trying to get an intelligent conversation going about mechanical advantage... Oh well :D

on a positive note:

I enjoyed watching your video,
you again proved that with enough block and tackle, you can use a small tractor and do big jobs.

main point: you got her done!!!!!!!

good show and no one got hurt, always a positive,

(quoted from post at 11:14:49 04/01/16) Nothing unintelligent about discussing
the dangers of it too
