TO30 gas cap wrong

I ordered the vented gas cap for my TO30 (which by the way on the website says fits virtually all the older Fergusons)here a week ago or so. When it arrived, it doesn't do the job. There is a lot of "play" once put on the tank, it has about 1/8th inch of up and down clearance ... clearly it won't seal the tank.

On the positive side, upon calling to do an RMA to return it, the representative said it wasn't worth mailing it back, he said to just keep it as the shipping alone would be more than the cap is worth. He refunded the cost of the cap.

So now, I need to find a new cap somewhere. Any ideas?
 
might try NAPA or do you have a dealership in the area, more cost, but somethings are important, properly fitting gas cap is one of them.

motor on, you must have the right, properly fitting vented cap

non vented and you will be stopped in the field about 20 mins from the house, due to no flow of fuel to the carb.

or with a leaking cap, splashing gas all over the motor, you might be on fire.
 
Might try a different source. Possibly the one they sent had been miss boxed. As far as I know they are all the same for the TO tractors.

The other possibility is the tank has been replaced. If it has a non standard cap, it will be a matter of trial and error to find one that fits.
 
Can you use the old cap and use the new rubber seal from new cap ? I've fixed one this way.Some time this is all that is wrong when they don't seal.
 
Ok, tried the rubber gasket that came with the new cap on the old cap. Can't completely lock it in place, just a tad too much. Found some old gasket material and put that on under the rubber gasket on the new cap and while it's a tight squeeze, it seems to do the job.

Haven't had need to use the tractor just yet, so if that does the job, I'll let everyone know.

Just make sure it is indeed a vented cap. Seems as though there are quite a few marked vented are not vented.
